Abstract
1,017,350. Regulating fluid flow. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 23, 1964, No. 47541/64. Heading G3H. A flow regulator valve comprises two or more flow impedance means 11, 12, 13 which each in the absence of all others have a substantially invariable individual flow impedance and which when the valve is to introduce its maximum impedance to flow are spaced apart along the flow path and have a collective flow impedance no more than the sum of their individual impedances, and means 15 for varying the separation of the flow impedance means, reductions of the separation reducing the collective impedance of the means and hence that of the valve. In the preferred embodiment, each means consists of a dished plate having six orifices, the outer plates being movable towards and away from the central plate by opposite screw threads 17, 18. The plates may be rotated with respect to each other as they are separated, actuated by bellows, or provided with graded orifices to prevent cavitation. Grooves in the wall of the duct may be used in place of the orifices when gas flow is to be controlled. The valve may be used to control the upward flow through the core of a sodium cooled fast reactor and is made of stainless steel.
