795,565. Dash pots. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 28. 1957 [Feb. 2, 1956]. No. 3269/56. Class 108(3) [Also in Group XL(a)] Control elements in a nuclear reactor are positionsd by a rod 11 and releasably connected to a hollow threaded shaft 7. driven through a nut 14. When necessary an electromagnet 8 is de-energized to allow the rod 11 and controlelement carriage 10 to fall freely, its fall being checked by an oil dashpot 33 in which a tapered stem 37 gradually reduces initial free passage of oil between the cylinder 35 and chamber 36. In the later stages of damping a preset relief valve 38 opens and finally flow is restricted through an orifice 40 by a needle 39; when the valve 38 closes again.
