880,489. Valves. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 5, 1960 [April 14, 1959; Feb. 12, 1960], Nos. 12709/59 and 5190/60. Class 135. [Also in Group XL (a)] Coolant flow restrictors in a nuclear reactor are adjusted by means responsive to coolant temperature, to stabilize the coolant temperature. Fig. 2 shows a sleeve 22 which can slide but not rotate in a channel 10. The sleeve is supported by a tube 32 sliding on a rotatable stem 27, and the tube 32 is suspended from a stack of interconnected ceramic discs 25 and dished Nb washers 26 in a guide tube 34. A change in coolant temperature causes the stack to change in length so that the sleeve opens or closes ports 57, thus changing the rate of flow of the coolant and hence the temperature to which it is heated. Overriding control is provided by rotating stem 27 to move a threaded collar 46 along the stem. In another embodiment the stack of discs and washers is replaced by a bellows filled with liquid metal such as Pb or Na.
