Abstract

753,130. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY OF LONDON. Jan. 4, 1945 [Jan. 21, 1944], No. 1220/44. Class 39 (4). A nuclear reactor comprises an outer shell 1 of a size greater than the critical size at which the chain reaction becomes divergent for the particular arrangement and composition chosen, a number of rods 2 of or containing fissile material parallel to one another, each rod being surrounded by a tube 3 made of aluminium or other material of low neutron absorption power. The annular spaces between the tubes and rods are connected to a header 4 to which a slowing- down liquid 5 is led. The slowing-down liquid, which may also act as a coolant, flows through the tubes and issues from the open ends thereof to fill the reactor shell to a convenient level. This level may be controlled by an outlet 6 so as to control the working volume of liquid. In a modification the liquid, after passing through the tubes, is drawn off at the top instead of entering the shell of the reactor and the liquid in the shell is controlled by an inlet and outlet at different levels in the shell. If desired the rods may be made hollow and the liquid may flow through them instead of through separate tubes.
