Abstract
897,450. Cooling reactors, UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 22, 1960 [Jan. 29, 1959; March 23, 1959], Nos. 3293/59 and 10063/59. Class 39(4). In a gas cooled nuclear reactor, the flow of coolant gas upwards through the interior of each vertical fuel element is controlled by a valve at the element upper end, which is adjustable from the refuelling face outside the biological shield. As shown, the fuel element string 14 is supported in the chamber 7 of the moderator 3 by tube 19 attached to plug 40 in biological shield 2. The -valve 20 is formed of sleeve 21, movable axially by the threaded rod 24 to adjust the spacing of apertures 22, 25 so as to permit the flow of coolant gas upwards through 14 and through 20 into the apertures 41 in the outlet duct 6. In a modification, not shown, 24 is tubular and forms a conduit for thermocouple leads. Sleeve 21 may be rotated about the vertical axis to register with aperture 25.
