Abstract

[Also in Division B8] Multi-layer blanks for bags, in which at least one layer is smaller than the others, are cut from a continuous web, Fig. 2, made by combining two or more webs 30, 21, of which the web 21 is narrower than the web 30 and has previously had excisions 47 cut in it to define part of the smaller layer. In the embodiments, the blanks are made from a foam layer 21 covered on one or both faces by paper layers 30, 31. In the blank of Fig. 2 foam free tabs 40, 41 are provided by the differences in width between the webs 21 and 30, 31 and foam free tabs 42-46 are produced by I-shaped excisions 47, the shaded area being cut out of the combined web when the blanks are cut out. Similarly the blank of Fig. 7 (not shown) is produced from the web of Fig. 6 (not shown), the transverse excisions (52, 53 and 55) in the foam web 21 producing foam free tabs (54) and (56). Foam free tabs (62-64) in the blank of Fig. 10 (not shown) are produced by making U-shaped excisions in the web 21. Similarly rectangular excisions in the web 21 produce foam free tabs (73, 74) for the blank of Fig. 11 (not shown). In this case the blank is erected into a box of which one wall (70), Fig. 12 (not shown), is made of cardboard. The above excisions are made in the foam layer 21 by a stamping or cutting device (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), compensating device (23) allowing the continuous feed of this web through the rest of the apparatus while the web moves intermittently through the device 22. Adhesived webs 30, 31 are then applied to the excized web 21 by guide rollers (24, 25), the combined web being pressed together by the pressing device (32). Finally blanks are stamped out of the composite web at (33). It may be necessary to provide a further compensating device between the stations (32, 33). If the web 21 already has the necessary excisions, the stamping and compensating devices (22, 23) may be omitted. Globular paper or similar substance producing a padding effect may be used instead of the foam web.
