Abstract

1,078,951. Gas burners. A. H. GREAVES. Jan. 12, 1966 [Jan. 12, 1965], No. 1334/65. Heading F4T. A gas burner comprises a hollow metal chamber 1 having an upper wall 6 formed with rows or groups of rows of burner ports 11 arranged transverse to the length of the burner. Smaller flame ports 14 are used to stabilize the main flames and ports 13 along the apex of the wall 6 interconnect the rows of ports 11 and serve as a ladder burner. Ports 11 and 13 have raised lips 12. 'The chamber 1 is formed from U and channel sections 4 and respectively with end plates 2 and 3, plate 2 supporting the outer end of a Venturi inlet 7 having a length less than four-fifths the length of chamber 1. An inlet nozzle 8 is supported in a box 9 which surrounds the end of the Venturi 7 and which has an air inlet opening 10 away from the burner ports 11. The box 9 may be replaced by metallic cloth or gauze. Below the wall 6 is a lining of metal gauze 15 held in place by :a closure plate 16 spaced from the wall 6 :by dimples 23 and having holes 18 corresponding to the ports 11. Spaced below the plate 16 is a perforated distributer plate 17. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the burner body is oval and has a stabilizing plate 21 formed with notches 22 fastened at rightangles along each of its sides immediately below the end ports of each row. The reduced velocity of gases at the ladder and stabilizer ports 13 and 14 may be obtained by sealing off these ports from the rest of the burner by means of a long thin gas chamber beneath the ports in which gases are metered by small orifices from the main chamber 19. The jet 8 may have a shoulder which pushes on a spring- loaded air shutter an amount determined by the position of the shoulder.
