Abstract
Compounds containing an average of >1 epoxy group per molecule are transesterified by heating to reflux with a fatty acid methyl ester in the presence of a volatile entraining agent (e.g. heptane or toluene). The resultant MeOH and entraining agent are distilled off and the mixture contacted with a selective solvent for the MeOH (e.g. water); after separation the entraining agent is recycled to the reaction mixture. The polyepoxide may be a polyglycidyl ether of 2,2-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane. Examples of catalysts are lithium hydroxide and lithium ricinoleate. The initial reflux may be carried out at between 100 DEG and 180 DEG C.
