Abstract
The dimerization of propylene is effected in an aqueous reaction medium containing an acidic catalyst and in the presence of a propylene solvent miscible with the aqueous reaction mixture and a solvent for propylene dimers immiscible with the aqueous reaction mixture. Preferred propylene solvent is isopropanol, the presence of which minimises its production; others are ethanol, propanol, butanols, ethylene glycol, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. Preferred dimer solvent is higher propylene polymers produced in the process, their presence also minimising their production; others are isopropyl ether, n-propyl ether, hexanol, kerosene, tetralin and decalin. The catalyst may be sulphuric, phosphoric, benzene sulphonic or toluene sulphonic acid or a cation exchange resin. Reaction is effected at 100-350 DEG C. and 500-5000 p.s.i. The reaction effluent is separated into two layers; the lower aqueous layer is recycled and the upper layer distilled to recover dimer and dimer solvent which is recycled.
