Abstract

Olefinic compounds are continuously produced by the acid catalysed dehydration of alcohols in the liquid phase and in the presence of a polar solvent, soluble in the alcohol and of higher boiling point than that of water and the olefinic compounds produced. Olefinic compounds referred to are olefins, cycloalkenes and aromatic compounds containing an olefinic double bond in a side-chain, e.g. styrene. Catalysts referred to are sulphuric, phosphoric and p-toluene sulphonic acids. Polar solvents referred to are phenols, e.g. phenol, cresol and xylenol, phenol derivatives, nitro-aromatic derivatives, e.g. nitrobenzene and nitrotoluene, and acetic acid and its derivatives, e.g. the halogenated derivatives such as mono- and dichloroacetic acids and the corresponding fluoroacetic acids. The dehydration may be carried out by heating a mixture of the catalyst, polar solvent and alcohol to boiling point, distilling off the reaction products and continuously adding additional alcohol to the reaction mixture to maintain the reaction volume constant. The preparation of cyclohexene and primary and secondary octene is described.
