Abstract

(1) Primary-tert. ether is obtd. by reacting (a) 4-7C tert. mono-olefin, with (b) 1-6C primary alcohol, in presence of (c) SO3H-containing cation exchange resin catalyst having specific surface area above 1 m2./g. and pore vol. above 0.05 ml./ml. before the reaction. (2) Continuous isolation of 4-7C tert. mono-olefins from a hydrocarbon mixt. is effected by (i) reacting the mixt. with a primary alcohol using a SO3H-containing cross-linked polystyrene ion exchange catalyst of above properties; (ii) separating corresponding primary-tert. ether; (iii) decomposing ether at raised temp. using steam and high surface area Al2O3; and (iv) recovering tert. olefin and primary alcohol for resulting decomposition products and recycling alcohol to ether formation.
