Abstract
1,165,479. Tertiary mono-olefins. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 9 July, 1968, No. 32613/68. Heading C5E. [Also in Division C2] Tertiary mono-olefins are prepared by decomposing ethers of the formula R-O-R<SP>1</SP>, wherein R is a C 4 -C 7 alkyl or cycloalkyl group having a tertiary carbon atom in the α-position and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 6 alkyl group, at elevated temperature in the presence of steam and of a catalyst comprising alumina having a surface area of at least 25 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., into C 4 -C 7 tertiary monoolefins and C 1 -C 6 primary alcohols. The process may be carried out at 180-300‹ C. with a steam :ether molar ratio of 10: 1 to 1: 1. The catalyst is preferably γ-alumina containing up to 10 wt. per cent of thermally stable anionic groups such as SO 4 --, and free of alkali or alkaline earth metals. Examples describe the decomposition of methyl tertiary-butylether to isobutene and methanol.
