Abstract

Fraction is treated with phenol or an alkylphenol in the presence of 0.5 wt.% (w.r.t. phenol) of aluminium, an alkylaluminium, or aluminium phenhydroxide at 100-160 degrees C and 2-30 atm. absolute and the product decomposed at 180-240 degrees C using the same catalyst, the isobutylene being separated and the (alkyl)phenol and undecomposed mono- or di-t-Bu)phenol recycled. Isobutylene is used to produce synthetic rubber, isoprene, resins and lube oils.
