Abstract

A butene mixture enriched in isobutene and butene polymers, particularly dimers, are obtained when a mixture of n- and iso-butenes are heated in the presence of an alkyl substituted aluminium hydride at 150-250 DEG C. whereby the n-butenes are selectively polymerized. The aluminium compound may be aluminium triethyl or tributyl e.g. formed in situ from an aluminium hydride or alkyl and the feed. The pressure may be 500-5000 p.s.i.g. The product is distilled to separate (a) unreacted materials enhanced in isobutene; (b) octenes, e.g. 2-ethylhexane-1; and (c) aluminium alkyl.
