Abstract

1407002 Epoxy resin containing acetoacetate groups and chelated metal HOECHST AG 30 July 1972 [24 Dec 1971] 36422/74 Divided out of 1407001 Addition to 1407001 Heading C3B An epoxy resin (E), containing acetoacetic ester groups (A ) and optionally ester groups (B) being RCOO- and RCO- is the acyl residue of a C 2-22 saturated or unsaturated fatty acid or an aromatic carboxylic acid, and also containing atoms of #1 polyvalent metal (M) at least partially chelated to the groups (A), is made by reacting an epoxy resin (F) containing groups (A), and optionally (B), in a solvent with (a) first an alkali metal alcoholate and then a salt of (M); (b) a salt of (M) in the presence of a tertiary amine; or (c) an alcoholate of (M) which, unless (F) contains groups (B), must have at least one valency of (M) bound to a hydrocarbon group or monomeric #-dicarbonyl compound (C). (C) may be acetoacetic ester or acetylacetone. The reaction may be performed, e.g. at 0- 120‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst which does not catalyse an epoxy-group reaction. A plurality of (M) compounds may be reacted simultaneously or successively with resin (F). Starting epoxy-resin (F) may be made by partial esterification of an epoxy resin with an acid or with an OH-group containing compound, followed by reaction of the thus-formed OH groups with diketene. Resin (E) may be modified by reaction of at least some of its acetoacetic ester groups (A) with (a) HCHO and amine to form a Mannich base, (b) an aldehyde to form alkylol groups, or (c) an amine to form #-aminocrotonate ester groups. Resin (E) may be hardened using conventional hardeners, many being listed. The resin may be used in solution as a coating. Uses.-Lacquers, paints, primers, adhesives, impregnating agents, moulding, road-marking. Specifications 1,407,001 and 1,407,003 are referred to.
