Abstract

The invention comprises (i) compounds of formula <FORM:1069845/C2/1> wherein RO is a free, etherified or acylated hydroxy group, R1 is an alkyl group, Y is a carbonyl, ketalized carbonyl, hydroxymethylene or acyloxymethylene group, Q is a methylene or ethylene group and the hydrogen atoms at the 8, 9 and 14 positions are trans to the group R1, including racemates of the 13b - and 13a -enantiomers, and (ii) a process for preparing 13-alkyl-8-iso-6-oxa-gona- or -D-homo-gona-1, 3,5(10)-trienes by catalytic hydrogenation of a corresponding 1,3,5(10),8-tetraene or 1,3,5(10), 8,14-pentaene, followed if desired, by (a) reduction of a carbonyl group Y to a hydroxymethylene group, (b) oxidation of a hydroxymethylene group Y to a carbonyl group, (c) 17 or 17a-ketalization or ketal hydrolysis, or (d) 3, 17 or 17a esterification or ester hydrolysis. The compounds of the invention have anti-lipaemic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration.
