Abstract

The invention comprises (a) compounds of formula <FORM:1091417/C2/1> wherein Z is a hydroxymethylene or carbonyl group and R is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 3 alkyl or acyl group, and (b) 6a -fluoro-11b -hydroxy- or 11- keto - 16a ,17a - isopropylidenedioxy-pregn -4-ene-3,20 dione, and their preparation from 6a - fluoro - 11a - hydroxy - 16a ,17a -isopropylidenedioxy -pregn - 4 - ene - 3,20 dione by (1) oxidation to the 3,11,20-trione, and reduction of this to the 3b -ol or 3b ,11b -diol, or (2) reduction to the 3b ,11a -diol, formation of a 3-ether, and oxidation to the 11-one, followed where appropriate, and if desired, by 3-etherification or esterification, oxidation to the 11-one or oxidation to the corresponding 3-keto -D 4-compound. The compounds of the invention have antiinflammatory activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration.
