Abstract

The invention comprises (i) compounds of formula <FORM:1069846/C2/1> wherein RO is a free, etherified or acylated hydroxy group, R1 is an alkyl group, Y is a carbonyl, ketalized carbonyl, hydroxymethylene or acyloxymethylene group, Q is a methylene or ethylene group and the hydrogen atoms at the 14, 8 and 9 positions have trans-anti-trans configuration with respect to the group R1, including racemates of the 13b - and 13a -enantiomers, and (ii) a process for preparing 13-alkyl-6-oxa-gona, or -D-homo-gona-1,3,5(10) trienes, having the configuration defined above by reduction of a corresponding 1,3,5(10), 9(11)-tetraene by catalytic hydrogenation or by the action of an alkali metal in liquid ammonia, with re-aromatization by oxidation, if necessary in the latter case, followed, if desired, by (a) oxidation of a hydroxy-methylene group Y to a carbonyl group, (b) reduction of a carbonyl group Y to a hydroxymethylene group, or (c) ketalization, acylation or hydrolysis of a group Y. The compounds of the invention have metrotropic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration.
