Abstract

1363814 Cycloaliphatic compounds FIRMENICH SA 11 Oct 1972 [11 Oct 1971 19 May 1972] 46847/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions A5 A2 and C5] The invention comprises compounds of the formula where Z is a radical of the formula or and X is a radical of the formula -CH 2 -, or where R is hydrogen or C 1 -C 6 alkyl and R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or acyl. The compounds may be prepared by (a) treating isoprene with a compound of the formula (b) epoxidizing a compound of the formula wherein the dotted lines show that the methyl group is either at position 4 or position 5, (c) catalytically hydrogenating the ethylenic bond in a compound of the formula (d) reducing the keto group of the compound of formula Ibh or of the saturated ketone derived therefrom to yield alcohols which may subsequently be esterified, (e) epoxidizing 5-methyl, tricyclo-[6.2.1.0<SP>2</SP>,<SP>7</SP>]-undec-4-ene to yield an epoxide which may subsequently be treated with an acidic or basic agent to give 5-methyl-4-oxotricyclo-[6.2.1.0<SP>2</SP>,<SP>7</SP>]-undecane.
