[Also in Division B5N] A helmet for protecting a wearer against sound waves has a depending skirt 11 which surround the neck with clearance, trails on the shoulders and incorporates a thin layer of material containing lead. A face opening 20 is sealed by an edge cushion 21 of foamed P.V.C. Overlapping front portions 22 are secured by complementary strips 23 of filamentary hooks and loops. The crown portion of the helmet may also include a lead-containing layer and is spaced from the head by a pad 19 of plastics foam. The helmet is preferably worn with a sleeveless jerkin (32) and cape (40), Fig. 6 not shown, each incorporating a layer of lead-containing material. The jerkin fronts overlap over their whole width and a crutch portion (34), (35) is detachably secured to the jerkin front by toggles (37). The cape comprises separate shoulder portions secured round the neck by a cord. The lead-containing layer may be cotton cloth carrying a thin dispersion of metallic lead in a bonding medium such as P.V.C. covered by P.V.C. sheeting. The panel edges may be reinforced by nylon strips and the lead-containing layer may be spaced from the wearer by a continuous lining of plastics foam or by pads at e.g. elbows.
