Abstract

1,069,112. Change speed gear. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. June 18, 1964 [July 23, 1963], No. 25317/64. Headings F2D and F2U. In a change-speed gear of the type described in Specification 923,267 wherein an input pinion 42 drives countershafts 46, 61 carrying identical sets of gears 47 ... 49, 51 . . . 53; 62... 67 which mesh and support pinions 78, 83, 87, 91, 94 in floating relation relative to an intermediate shaft 72 to which the latter pinions are selectively clutched, the intermediate shaft is mounted for limited radial movement to provide balanced gear loading. As shown the shaft 72 is mounted between input and output shafts 41, 101 by rods 106, 113 the enlarged ends 107, 114 of which are press fitted in recesses 103, 104 in the shaft 72 whilst the other end of the rod 106 is carried by a bearing 112 in a recess in the input shaft 41 and the other ball end 122 of the rod 107 engages a hole 121 in a plate 124 fast with the output shaft 101. The resilience of the rods 106, 113 permits radial movement of the shaft 72. The intermediate and output shafts 72, 101 are connected by an internally and externally splined sleeve 123. The intermediate shaft 72 is selectively clutched to the input pinion 42 or to the pinions 78, 83, 87, 91, 94 by three double position clutches 82, 89, 98. The pinion 94 is driven from the countershaft gears 53, 67 through reversing idlers. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the intermediate shaft is mounted on an axial project of the input shaft and a rubber bush is interposed between the intermediate shaft and a bearing bush within which the project is journalled. A power take-off may be taken from gears 118, 119.
