Abstract

1367195 Change-speed gear DAVID BROWN GEAR INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 May 1972 20732/72 Heading F2D A variable speed and reverse gear-box comprises an input shaft 11, rotatably supporting a coaxial output shaft 13, an intermediate shaft in the form of a sleeve 16 surrounding the output shaft, a layshaft 18 constantly driven by the input shaft and a countershaft 20 carrying both dual-range and reverse gears 40, 41 and 35. A dog clutch 32 connects the input shaft 11 or a gear 26 to the intermediate shaft 16, or occupies a neutral position. Dog clutch 33 connects either of gears 27, 28 to the intermediate shaft 16 or occupies a neutral position. A reverse gear 34 fixed on the layshaft 18 meshes constantly with a reverse gear 35 which is rotatably mounted on the countershaft 20, Fig. 2, and which is lockable thereto by a dog clutch 36. Gears 40, 41 integral with the countershaft 20 mesh with a gear 38 rigidly secured to the intermediate shaft 16 and a gear 42 which is rotatably mounted on the output shaft 13 and is lockable thereto by a dog clutch 43 or a synchromesh device 44. The clutch 43 alternatively connects the intermediate shaft 16 to the output shaft 13, Fig. 1. Selector forks 49-51 are actuated manually from a shaft 54 and arm 55 to control clutches 32, 33, 36, and clutch 43 is controlled by a selector fork 53 on a selector rod 47 actuated by a compressed air ram 56. A power take-off shaft 58 is connectable to the layshaft 18 by means of a manually controlled clutch 61. Operation.-To obtain any of the eight forward speeds, one of clutches 32, 33 is operated to cause the intermediate shaft 16 to rotate at one of four different speeds, and clutch 43 is operated to cause the output shaft 13 to be rotated at the same speed as or at a different speed from the shaft 16. To obtain either of the reverse speeds, the clutch 36 is operated to cause the countershaft 20 to rotate in the same direction as the input shaft 11 and the intermediate shaft 16 to rotate in the opposite direction. Clutch 43 is operated to cause the output shaft to rotate at a speed which is the same as or different from that of the shaft 16. The dualrange gears may be chosen so as to provide an overdrive.
