Abstract

883,353. Change-speed gear; friction clutches. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 24, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6401/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] An auxiliary change-speed gear providing two ratios, or forward-and-reverse, and preceding the main change-speed gear of a vehicle such as a tractor or fork-lift truck comprises a friction clutch 17A engageable to couple an input shaft 14 to an aligned output shaft 21 for direct drive, and a friction clutch 17B engageable to couple the output shaft to a quill shaft 18 driven by a countershaft 34. As shown, the quill shaft is constantly driven through gears 31, 32, countershaft 34 and gears 33, 38 to give a reduced ratio, alternatively, an idler may be interposed between gears 33, 38 to give reverse. A power take-off shaft 24 is driven by an idler 86 meshing the gear 33. Clutches,-The clutches are of the multiple disc type and have discs 46, 47 splined to the respective driving shafts and discs 63, 64 splined to a clutch housing 48 fast with a sleeve 53 splined to the output shaft 21. A shift collar 68 is actuated by a hand lever 22 and controls clutch engaging levers 71, 72 which are pivoted at 69, 70 to the housing 48 and are interconnected by a rod 76. A cam follower roller 73 is rotatably mounted on each lever 71, 72 for engagement with a cam face 74 of a thrust plate 61 of the corresponding clutch, the arrangement being such that the clutches are alternatively engageable with corresponding disengagement of the other clutch, and a neutral position is provided in which neither clutch is engaged.
