Abstract

1,067,511. Radiant tubes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 30, 1964 [Oct. 30, 1963], No. 42858/63. Heading F4B. A furnace e.g. for carburizing is heated by U- shaped nickel chromium alloy radiant heating tubes 5 provided at the end of one limb with a gas burner 7 and at the end of the other limb with a heat exchanger 21 arranged to heat the combustion air to the burners by exhaust gases from the burners. The combustion air enters inlet 43 and passes into an annular space between a finned heat transfer element 31 and an inner tube 25 where it is indirectly heated by the exhaust gases passing between tube 5 and the element 31, the exhaust gases finally leaving through flue 23. At the end of the tube 31 the air passes through openings 39 and back down the inside of tube 25 to a duct 27 which conveys it to the burner end of the radiant tube. Gas enters this end through a pipe 9 and is ignited at the end of tube 11 by a pilot burner 15. The ends of the radiant tubes which project out of the furnace, Fig. 1 (not shown), are surrounded by a metal box 44 filled with thermal insulation 45.
