Abstract

An alkali metal, e.g. Na, silicate is prepared by reacting an alkali metal chloride with NO2 to give the nitrate and NOCl; reacting the nitrate with SiO2, e.g. sand, to give the silicate and NO; oxidizing the NO to NO2, which is recycled; and decomposing the NOCl into Cl2 and NO. This NO may be oxidized (e.g. by decomposing in O2) and the NO2 recycled. The chloride -NO2 reaction occurs at room temperature; the nitrate -SiO2 reaction may be carried out in a rotary or glass-making furnace. Glass-making ingredients, e.g. Ca, Mg, Al and B, and alkali metal salts, e.g. Na2CO3, Na2SO4 and borax, may be added to SiO2 with the nitrate. The Ca may be added as limestone or dolomite, in which case Co2 is formed and may be separated from the NO by washing with water, or as sulphate, in which case SO3 is formed which reacts with the alkali metal chloride to give sulphate and HCl, the latter reacting with NO to give NOCl.
