Abstract
A method of preparing a glass batch comprises adding an aqueous solution of caustic soda to a mixture of sand, soda-ash and a calcium-carbonate-containing material in a quantity sufficient to provide between 5 and 40% by weight of the Na2O content of the soda ash contained, and controlling the reaction of the caustic soda with the calcium carbonate so that no more than 50% by weight of the caustic soda is reacted with the calcium carbonate before the mixture is fed to a glass forming furnace by regulating the temperature of the mixture and the time in which the mixture is fed to the furnace. The aqueous solution of caustic soda is preferably 35 to 70% solution of NaOH. The calcium carbonate may be in the form of limestone, dolomite or a mixture thereof. If dolomite is used, the material must be fed to the furnace within 2 to 8 hours of addition of the caustic soda, and if limestone within 4 hours after addition of the caustic soda. The temperature of the batch is maintained below 200 DEG F., preferably between 40 DEG and 160 DEG F. A typical glass batch given is sand 57%; Na2CO3 18.5%; Na2SO4 3.5%; dolomite 13.0%; limestone 3.5%; feldspar 3.5%.
