Abstract

1,141,924. Silica beads. OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc. 15 April, 1966, No. 16716/66. Heading C1A. Spherical silica beads (e.g. diameter 1Á- 1-5 mm.) are prepared by agitating a single aq. phase mixture of (a) a compound xM 2 oySiO 2 , wherein M is an alkali metal and x/y is greater than 0À24, in a concentration equivalent to 50-800 m.moles SiO 2 per litre (b) (2N + A) m. equivs. of acid per litre where N is the number of m.moles of M 2 O per litre and A is 0 to 4000 (the reactant concentrations being expressed as theoretical concentrations before reaction), and (c) from 1 to 150 g./l. of a water soluble emulsifying agent at a temperature between 80‹ C. below the b.p. of the mixture up to its b.p. at the prevailing pressure for from 1 minute to 12 hours. Preferably (a) is a sodium silicate, e.g. Na 2 O 3À36 SiO 2 , (b) may be H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , HCl, acetic, oxalic or benzenesulphonic acid, and (c) may be an emulsifier which is non ionic, cationic or anionic but the nonylphenylether of polyethylene glycol is preferred. A compound of Al and O (e.g. kaolin) may also be added to the mixture in amounts up to 10g Neutral salts such as NaCl may also be included.
