Abstract

1,065,824. Locks and keys. J. W. TAYLOR. May 11, 1964 [Feb. 13, 1963], No. 5781/63. Heading E2A. A lock includes a casing 2 having impediments, e.g. levers, not shown, mounted therein, and a key 7 insertable into the casing from each side, has two bit portions 5, 6, the bit portion 5 engaging and actuating the impediments when the key is inserted from one side, and the bit portion 6 engaging and actuating the impediments when the key is inserted from the opposite side, means being provided for locating each bit portion in correct relationship to the impediments when the key is inserted from each side. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 the lock is a rim lock and the idle bit portion rotatets in a recess 9 of a door 1 on which the lock is mounted. The means for locating the bit portions is a rib 11 on -the bit portion 6 which prevents it from passing through a conventional keyhole slot in a cover plate 3 but which permits it to pass through a correspondingly shaped slot in the casing 2. The locating means is alternatively formed by forming the bit portions 5 and 6 of differing cross-sections and making the keyholes in the cover plate 3 and casing 2 of corresponding cross-sections as shown e.g. in Fig. 5 (not shown).
