LOCK.
Application led October 2, 1922. Serial No. 591,685.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SEGAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a s eciiication.
My invention relates to ocks and has for its principal object the production of a lock of sim le construction, certain parts of which s all be provided with means to facilitate the finding or locating of the key hole in the dark or under other abnormal conditions.
To the above ends my invention consists in the novel parts and combinations thereof hereinafter more articularly described and then specified in t e claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings showing a practical embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a conventional form of cylinder lock showing the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modification. Y
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 1 indicates a portion of a dooror other closure which is provided with an annular opening 2 extendin therethrough. 3 indicates the cylinder o an ordinary in tumbler lock while 4 indicates the tumb er housing forming a part thereof'and which su ports lpin tumblers therein (not shown). aid cy der 3 is provided with an annular face or outer plate 5 preferably integral therewith and of a size permittin it to be received by the opening 2.- The cy Inder also has perforated screw-threaded ears 6 integral there with receiving the screws 7 passing throughl the rear or supporting plate 8, whereby the cylinder and adjacent parts may be held in proper position within and against forward withdrawal through the opening 2. I have also provided a conventional form of escutcheon ring 9 within which the face plate 5 is seated, the wall of said escutcheon extending outwardly beyond the surface of the face plate 5 and the edge thereof en agitxg -the face of the door 1 as clearly in 'ca in Fig. 2.
through an opening in the sulilptnrtingl plate,y
8, with the lock mechanism w ic oused in a suitable casing mounted on the inside of the door. The spindle or other connection. the lock' mechanism and the casing therefor, however, are not shown in the drawing as they may be of any convenient form and construction and form no part of the present invention. The lock is operated in the usual manner by insertion of a key in the key hole 1'1 and by a turning of the key which rotates the key plug 10 and operates the lock mechanism.
The face plate 5 is provided with a slot or groove l2 the walls of which are beveled or This slot is in alignment with the key hole '1 1 and extends through the key plug 10. It
also preferably extends from one side of the face plate to the other side and meets or communicates with the side Wall of the escutcheon ring 9.
If it is desired .to locate the key hole or opening 11 in the dark by means of the proper key so as to actuate the lock mechanism, the end of the key is brought into contact with the outer surface of the face plate 5 and then with the wall` of the escutcheon ring 9. Itis then moved around said Wall the required distance and until it engages within the slot 'or groove 12, after which it is pressed downwardly or upwardly, as the case may be. in said slot until it registers or is brought within the key hole or opening 11. The particular construction described and shown prevents the troublesome and timeconsuming feeling for the key hole as the escutcheon ring 9, as well as the slot or groove 12, in conjunction, and separately.
provide a guiding means whereby the end of 10o 12 shown in the preferred form of the inven- 105 tion. In this case I provide a portion of the face plate 5 with a depressed portion which I have indicated at 13, this depressed portion forming with the raised or normal portion of the face plate, a. ridge 14 which com-A 110 municates with or extends to the walls of the escutcheon ring 9 as well as the keyhole 11. To find the key hole or opening the end of the key is brought into contact w1th either the raised or depressed portion'of the face plate and, if necessary, moved untily brought into Contact with the side Wall oi? the eseutcheon rin after which it is moved along said side wal until it contacts with or engages the ridge 14, whereupon it is moved along said ridge until it reaches the key hole or opening 11. l
It will be appreciated that my invention is not limited to anyspecific construction of lock but may be applied 'with lequal advan-y tage to locks other than 'those of the pin tumbler type. It will also be understood that the invention is lnot limited to an annular face plate nor is it limited. to a ringshaped escutcheon as the face iplate and eseutcheon may have other con gurations if so desired.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a look, an annular face plate provided with a key holetherein, an escutcheon ring surrounding said face plate and guiding means communicating with said key hole an said escutcheon ring and meeting said ring at opposite sides thereof.
2. In a look, a face plate provided with a guiding slot therein and `a key plug mounted 1n said face plate `and provided with a key hole therein, said" key plug also having a guiding slot registering with said rst-mentioned guiding slot.
3. In a lock, an annular face plate provided with a guiding slot therein, an eseutoheon ring surrounding said face plate and a key plug mounted in said face plate and having a key hole therein, said key plug also being provided with a guiding slot registering withl said first-named guiding slot.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this th day of September A. D. 1922.
SAMUEL SEGAL.
