Abstract

1,063,694. Photographic physical developers. N. V. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Sept. 12, 1963 [Sept. 14, 1962], No. 35944/63. Heading G2C. An acid-reacting physical developer for latent metal nuclear images comprises an ionic surface active compound, more than 0À006 mols/litre of a silver compound, more than 0À05 mols/litre of a ferrous compound and a ferric compound in such concentration that the activity and/or life of the developer is increased compared with a reference developer of the composition: - 0À05 mols/litre of ferrous sulphate, 0À005 mols/litre of ferric nitrate, 0À14 mols/litre of citric acid, 0À006 mols/litre of silver nitrate and the same surface active compound in the same amount; the activity and life of the developer being at least equal to the reference developer. The ferrous compound may be ferrous sulphate or ferrous ammonium sulphate and the ferric compound may be ferric nitrate. The developers may comprise citric, oxalic, malonic, tartaric or lactic acid or ethylene diamine tetracetic acid. When certain acids are present (such as citric or oxalic acids) which reduce ferric compounds to ferrous compounds in ultraviolet light, the developer may be compounded with excess ferric compound but no ferrous compound, and then exposed to ultraviolet radiation before use to give a developer according to the invention. The developer may contain a thickening agent such as gum tragacanth and be applied as a paste to the image to be developed. When the metal nuclear image is obtained in a secondary reaction, e. g. by treating an exposed sheet, sensitized with an aqueous solution of o-methoxy-benzene diazosulphonate and cadmium lactate, with an aqueous solution of mercurous nitrate and silver nitrate, the mercurous nitrate may be incorporated into the developer according to the invention and both the secondary treatment and physical development effected in a single step.
