Abstract

1429687 Photographic physical development process ITEK CORP 25 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 25278/73 Heading G2C A process of photographic physical development comprises contacting a photographic element comprising a support carrying a layer containing an image pattern of physical development nuclei and, in said layer or in a layer contiguous thereto, a physical developer activator, with a unitary physical developer having a #E of less than 100 millivolts. The physical development activator is present in an amount sufficient to increase the physical development rate at least about 30% on that obtained in the absence of said activator, and specified activators include ammonium citrate, tartrate or lactate, sodium salicylate, sulphate, tartrate or hydrogen tartrate, calcium acetate, disodium EDTA, t-butylamine tartrate, acetylacetone and triethanolamine. A unitary physical developer is one containing metal ions in the same solution as a reducing agent for such ions, and the #E indicates that the developer has a low activity, giving little or no useful image in the absence of a physical developer activator. The image pattern of development nuclei may be formed (i) by exposure of a photographic silver halide emulsion, (ii) by exposure of a photo-conductor e.g. TiO 2 with or without treatment with a metal ion e.g. Ag ion solution, (iii) by exposure of a ferric salt/silver salt sensitized medium, (iv) by diffusion transfer, (v) by exposure of a photopolymer layer over a germ nuclei layer, or (vi) by exposure of a prefogged photo-sensitive lead iodide or As 2 S 3 material. The process is especially used in the preparation of printing plates having grained and anodized aluminium supports and Examples 1, 2 and 16-27 illustrate this using silver chloride emulsions and silverdepositing physical developers.
