Abstract

1355670 Photographic reversal processes AGFA-GEVAERT AG 17 Nov 1971 [17 Nov 1970] 53280/71 Heading G2C A photographic reversal process for producing positive images comprises (a) imagewise exposing a light-sensitive silver salt emulsion, (b) developing to produce a negative silver image, (c) treating with a compound containing a peroxo group e.g. a peroxide, perborate, percarbonate, persulphate, organic peroxide or a urea/H 2 O 2 compound, to decompose the compound in the silver image areas, (d) forming a positive image by decomposing the remaining peroxide in the presence of a substance which catalyses the decomposition less strongly than the silver image and then rendering the image visible by forming a vesicular image or by an oxidative colour change with a suitable reaction component. Preferably the silver image is then bleached out. Specified catalytic substances for step (d) are (i) nuclei of Cu, Ag, Au, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os or Pt either present initially in the layer or produced by fogging development or (ii) a protein as in Specification 1332692 initially present in the layer. In the examples, a silver halide emulsion is imagewise exposed and developed with a fogging developer, treated with a peroxide bath and left for 20 seconds so that the fogged, unexposed areas can decompose the peroxide, treated with a solution containing 2-amino-5(N-ethyl-N-ethoxyamino) tolmene or 1, 7 dehydroxynaphthalene or heated (preferably hydrazine is added to the peroxide treatment) to produce a coloured or vesicular image respectively. The silver image is then bleached out. Alternatively, a colloidal metal sol e.g. Ag, Au, Pc, Pd, Os or Ir may be added to the silver halide emulsion and a non-fogging developer is used. The silver halide emulsion may contain a colour coupler in which case the coloured image is produced by using a colour developer.
