Abstract

1275074 Photographic internal latent image silver halide processing EASTMAN KODAK CO 22 May 1969 [22 May 1968] 26150/69 Heading G2C A method of developing an internal latent image or improving the stability of a photo-developed internal latent image in a layer of a silver halide composition comprises treating the layer with a silver halide developing solution having substantially no silver halide solvent power and containing a silver complexing-agent which is a compound having a group which forms a covalent bond with silver and a II-bonding group, and which is present at a concentration such that a negative developed or negative stabilized photo-developed image is obtained. The group which forms a covalent bond with silver is preferably a mercapto or inino group. The II-bonding group may be an aromatic ring, a group containing a C-C double bond or a group containing at least one donor atom which has two non-bonding electron pairs e.g. C-O-C, C-S-C or S-S groups. The silver complexing agent is preferably a compound which has a solubility in water at 70‹ F. of at least 10<SP>-5</SP> mole per litre and is capable of forming a silver ion complex in a proportion of at least one silver ion per molecule of the complexing agent in the presence of excess silver ions as measured by potentiometric titration. Preferred silver complexing agents are 1-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole, 2-mercapto-imidazole (also in the material in Ex 5), dithiourazole, allylthiourea, 4-carboxymethyl-4-thiazoline-2-thione, 6- mercaptobenzoic acid, 2-thiouracil, 2, 5- dimercapto-1,2,4-thiadiazole, 2, 5-dithioliurea, 2-thioorotic acid, 2, 6-dimercaptopurine and 1-phenyl-2-thiourea. The layer of silver halide composition may be treated with a photographic silver bleach bath before treatment with the developing solution. The layer may be stabilized or fixed and washed after treating the latter with the developing solution.
