Abstract

1,061,534. Pipe joints. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. Aug. 19, 1965 [Sept. 11. 1964]. No. 28734/64. Heading F2G. In a spigot and socket pipe joint, a sealing mem ber is secured to a socket 2 and comprises a first resilient sleeve part 4hav ing a sliding or a slight clearance fit with a spigot 6 and a second elastomeric ring part 7 having an appreciable interference fit with said spigot an annular space 8 at the side of the ring part remote from the sleeve part of volume within the radial clearance between the mating spigot and socket not less than the volume of the annular portion of the ring part projecting radially inwards or outwards beyond the sleeve part whereby the distorted material of said annular part is accommodated. In a modification. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the sealing member is secured to the spigot. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the sleeve is integrally connected at 12 to the ring part, which is inwardly dished in the undistorted position, and is provided with a flange 13 conforming a chamfer 14 at the socket mouth. Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) illustrate an inversion of the former arrangement, the integral two-part sealing member being secured to the spigot. In further modifications, Figs. 9-16 (not shown), the ring part is of rounded form, the space between the ring and sleeve parts also providing accommodation for the displaced ring material when the joint is made. Two or more ring parts may be provided. The sleeve and ring parts may be formed of different material but are preferably formed of the same material such as polyurethane to enable the sealing member to cast or moulded in situ. The socket may be tapered as shown, and the spigot may be provided with a lead-in taper.
