Abstract

A surface is coated with metal, e.g. to improve its wear-resistance and solderability, by treating it with a catalyzing solution for Ni or Co plating such as a dilute solution of PdCl2 in water acidified with HCl, chemically plating Ni or Co on the treated surface, and chemically plating Au on the Ni - or Co - plated surface, e.g. by immersion in a solution of composition: NH4Cl F5g/1, NaNO3 50g/1, NaH2PO2 10g/1 and KAu(CN)2 2g/1. A chemical Ni plating solution may have the composition: Na4P2O7 50g/1, NiSO4 25g/1, NaH2PO2 25g/1 and NH4OH sufficient to maintain pH value 10 - 11. The above steps may be repeated one or more times. The surface to be coated may be the copper conducting areas of a printed circuit board of plastic insulating material. After treating the surface with catalyzing solution, the board may be rinsed in dilute HCl to remove catalyzing ions from the insulating portion.
