In a portable liquid atomizer in which depression of a spring-loaded piston 20 causes liquid in a saturated pad 29 to eject through an atomizing nozzle 32 a ball 39 located in a groove 38 in a rod 25 fixed to the piston is used to lock the piston in its innermost position when the atomizer is not required. The ball slides in a guideway 36 in a sleeve 33 through which the rod 25 moves and as long as the piston is not depressed such that its upper surface moves below the upper edge of the atomizer continuous depression alternating with spring-loaded return may be effected. An elbow 37 is formed in the sleeve at the bottom of the guideway 36 such that when piston locking is required depression of the piston entirely into the atomizer allows the ball to engage the elbow. Simultaneously with this piston locking, a head 26 at the lower end of the rod 25 engages an aperture 41 in a flanged collar member 40 attached to a plug-like portion 11 of the atomizer which is fixed to a container (not shown) for the liquid to be atomized. This engagement of head and aperture seals the interior of the container from the pad 29, and associated nozzle 32. Unlocking of the piston and reopening of the path between the container and the pad is effected by further depression of the piston and tilting of the atomizer until the ball 39 is released from the elbow 37. During spraying, replenishment of the pad 29 is effected by imersion of the atomize and container such that on each retractive stroke of the piston liquid is sucked successively through the chamber 15 surrounding the head 26 and orifices 19 in a partition 13 separating the latter chamber 15 and the pad 29.
