Abstract
105,968. Connolly, T. A., and Connolly, J. B. May 3, 1916. Movable-abutment type; working-fluid supply; reversing details. -Two cylinders 1, 1<1> acting as intermittent abutments for their own pistons 2, 2<1> are each connected to the piston of the other cylinder by arms 4, 4<1> having sleeves mounted to rotate independently on a stationary shaft 6. Each arm carries a double-ended dog 10<1>, Fig. 5, engaging a ratchet-wheel 9 mounted loosely on one of the said sleeves and rigidly connected to a pulley wheel 11 which transmits the power. The cylinders are alternatively locked against backward rotation by pawls engaging toothed wheels rigidly connected to the cylinders. In a two-stroke internal-combustion engine, the charge is drawn through passages in the fixed shaft 6 and the said sleeves into alternately registering ducts 15, 15<1> leading to the inlet passages 14, 14<1> of the cylinders 1, 1<1> where the charge is ignited by sparking-plugs 20, 20<1> and finally exhausted through ports 23, 23'. By reversing the positions of the locking-pawls, the engine is reversed. A modification is described having straight cylinders and pin-and-slot connexions for the ends of the piston-rods 3, 3<1>.
