Abstract

106,386. Hutson, T. W. Aug. 26, 1916. Movable-abutment type; working-fluid supply; valves, distributing etc.; starting.-Relates to a rotary engine of the kind wherein two sets of piston vanes are used, each set acting alternately as fixed abutments while the other set rotates. The annular cylinder 1 is formed in halves meeting in a plane which is at right-angles to the shaft, and each half-cylinder has a semi-circular cross-section and carries one set of vanes, being alternately locked against backward rotation and clutched to the shaft 3 by free-wheel devices 3<A>. One half-cylinder carries the valves 5 controlling the inlet and outlet ports 17, 16, the valves being operated by striking-gear such as the pin 6 on the other half-cylinder. For starting and for use as a momentum device, a wheel 7 is provided so as to operate, through chain gear 8 and universal joint 14, a pinion 12 meshing with an endless rack 19 on the opposite half-cylinder. The engine described is an internal-combustion engine, but may be adapted for use with steam &c.
