Abstract

Esters, including lactones, are converted to the corresponding monohydric or dihydric alcohols by reaction with hydrogen at elevated temperature and superatmospheric pressure in the presence of a copper hydrogenation catalyst comprising Raney copper or barium oxide-promoted copper chromite. The esters may carry hydroxy or amino groups on the acyl portion of the molecule. Examples are given of the hydrogenation of (a) a mixture of 1,6-hexane diol esters of adipic and epsilon-hydroxy caproic acids to give 1,6-hexanediol; (b) ethyl pelargonate to give nonyl alcohol and (c) epsilon-caprolactone to give 1,6-hexane diol. Among other starting materials mentioned are butyrolactone, gamma-valerolactone, and hexyl (6-amino) caproate.
