Abstract

Alcohols are produced by passing an ester, prepared from an aliphatic carboxylic acid and an aliphatic alcohol having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in admixture with an aliphatic alcohol, having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms per molecule, and hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure over a solid copper-containing catalyst. Generally the same alcohol is used as diluent as is used for the esterification of the acid. Suitable catalysts are, for example, copper chromite, copper-zinc-chromite or copper-zinc which may be applied to carriers such as silica gel, pumice stone or alumina. In the examples: (a) the methyl ester of sperm oil fatty acid is passed with methanol and hydrogen over a copper-zinc-chromium catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure to give the corresponding alcohols; (b) the butyl ester of sperm oil fatty acid is mixed with butanol and treated with hydrogen in the presence of a silica gel containing copper-barium chromite catalyst to give the corresponding alcohols; and (c) the methyl ester of coconut oil fatty acid is mixed with methanol and treated with hydrogen in the presence of a copper-zinc catalyst to give the corresponding alcohols.ALSO:Copper-containing catalysts are used for the preparation of alcohols by the catalytic reduction of esters. In the examples catalysts are prepared by (a) precipitating with soda the basic copper-zinc carbonate from the solution of the nitrates, drying and breaking it into small pieces and reducing with hydrogen or a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen; (b) treating the basic copper-zinc carbonate formed as in (a) with sufficient ammonium chromate solution to react with 1/4 of it, followed by drying and forming into pellets; and (c) steeping lumpy silica gel in an aqueous solution containing copper nitrate, barium nitrate and chromic acid, followed by drying and roasting in an air current.
