Abstract
Gibberellic acid or a derivative of the formula: <FORM:0964987/C1/1> in which R1 is hydrogen or a methyl, ethyl or propyl radical and R2 is hydrogen or a hydroxy group, is reduced with hydrogen and a palladium catalyst in the presence of a catalyst poisoning agent, whereby the double bond shown in the formula is reduced but the exocyclic methylene group remains unaffected. The catalyst may be palladium deposited on a support, e.g. barium carbonate, calcium carbonate, carbon or barium sulphate, and the catalyst poisoning agent may be an organic base, e.g. cyclohexylamine or piperidine but preferably a tertiary organic base, e.g. pyridine or triethylamine. The reduction may be effected at atmospheric temperature and pressure and a solvent, e.g. ethyl acetate or tetrahydrofuran, may be present. Examples are given in which (1) gibberellic acid is reduced to gibberellin-A1 (dihydrogibberellic acid); (2) methyl gibberellate is reduced to gibberellin-A1 methyl ester; (3) gibberellin-A7 is reduced to gibberellin-A4 (dihydrogibberellin-A7).
