Abstract

1,058,192. Seals. WILLIAMS & JAMES (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Nov. 1, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1962], No. 41295/62. Heading F2B. A seal for a piston or plunger comprises two axially-spaced seals 28, 29, the space between the seals being in communication with the liquid acting on the operative face of the piston or plunger, so as to lubricate the seals. As shown, the seal is mounted in an annular chamber 22 surrounding the plunger 14 of an hydraulic pump having a cylinder block 16 provided with inlet and outlet valves 17, 18. High and lowpressure seals 29, 28, which are preferably made of rubber, are held in place by a pair of telescoped tubular housings 23, 24 having seals 26, 27 on their end faces and pressed axially into engagement by a compression spring 25. An annular groove between the seals communicates through radial bones 30 with the chamber 22 through which the pump suction is led; if desired, the pump induction flow may be throttled before entering the chamber 22. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the seals are held in a common housing (33) which is mounted, together with a spacing sleeve (37), between the cylinder block and pump casing. When the invention is applied to a multiplunger pump, the chamber 22 constitutes a common gallery for the suction fluid inlet to the ports.
