Abstract

A process for packing fish fillets prior to deep freezing consists of filling with the fillets a pressing chamber, the cross-section of which is greater than that of the desired packet, the chamber being completely enclosed and the fillets being pressed into a pressing channel with gradual diminution of the cross-section and thus formed into a strip of the crosssection of the desired packet, whereupon a packet length is cut off and packed. Washed fish fillets are conveyed to a trough 3 into which they are packed by hand with their tails directed towards the pressing channel 7. After filling the trough to a predetermined level, a gate 4 is opened allowing the fillets to drop into a pressing chamber 5 of cross-section similar to, but larger than, that of the desired packet. The gate 4 is closed, and the fillets are pressed through channel 7 by a plunger 6 having a spring-mounted working face 22 thereon into a unit 9, there being a knife 8 at the end of the channel 7. Entry of the compressed fillets into the unit 9 pushes forward the preceding cut-off portion into one of two chambers 25a, 25b of an oscillatable carrier 10. Ejection plungers 14 and packet transporting conveyers 15 are provided on each side of a support 24, only one set being shown in Fig. 4. As the fillet portion enters a carrier chamber it engages a feeder 13 which causes the knife 8 to cut off the next portion and which initiates the movement of the carrier 10 to one side. Simultaneously, the plunger 14 ejects the preceding portion from the other chamber into a packet 16 on a conveyer 15. In place of the loading trough, a second pressing chamber may be provided alongside the chamber 5, both being movable across the direction of compression and being actuated by one working piston. The chamber 5 may have a circular cross-section. The parts 7, 9, 10 can be interchanged with similar parts per packets of different sizes.
