Abstract
<PICT:1057533/C6-C7/1> In the hot dip galvanizing of steel strip the coated strip after emerging from the molten bath e.g. at a distance of 8-12 feet is chilled by a jet of wet steam to cause a temperature drop of at least 75 DEG F. to prevent the formation of spangles. According to Fig. 1 (not shown), a steel strip 7 passes via a controlled atmosphere chute 8 into the galvanizing pot 10 and the coated strip 15 passes into a tower formed by walls 52, 53 where it is sprayed with wet steam from a series of overlapping V jets 67 and 68 which are inclined to the horizontal in the direction of travel of the strip. The steam is supplied from a condenser 20 and the position of the jets in relation to the exit from the galvanizing bath can be adjusted by means of the supporting brackets 62 and 63.
