Abstract

In a continuous hot dip process for coating strip such as steel with metal e.g. Zn, Cd, Al, Zn and Pb, the weight of the applied coating metal is controlled by passing the strip in planar configuration through a control zone above the surface of the molten coating bath, in which zone there is no mechanical contact with the strip and the metal coating remains molten and in which a stream of hot gas such as superheated steam is applied across the full width of each of the strip faces at an angle of incidence of 0 DEG -15 DEG above the perpendicular. According to Figures 1, 2 and 3 (not shown) the strip (24) is guided from the coating bath by a sinker roll (25) immersed in the bath and a top roll (26) between nozzles (28) and (29) supplied with superheated steam. Submerged supports (40) and (41), and guide roll (42) and cooling jets may also be provided. The nozzles supplying the hot gas are supported in such a way that the angle of impingement of the gas on the strip, the height above the bath, the gap between the nozzles and the gap between the nozzles and the strip can all be adjusted to control the weight of coating metal. The gas temperature is also controlled e.g. at 550 DEG -850 DEG F. and differential coating weights can be formed on both faces of the sheet by varying the distance of the respective nozzle from the strips and/or by adjusting the rate of gas flow, i.e. gas pressure. The nozzle outlet width is preferably 0.005" to 0.015".
