Abstract
The heat stability and solvent resistance of vinyl and vinylidene chloride polymers are improved by a process which comprises incorporating in said polymers a tris-1-aziridinyl phosphine oxide of formula <FORM:1057175/C3/1> where R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or C1- 5 alkyl, preferably methyl, alone in prepolymerized form or in monomeric or prepolymerized form together with triallyl phosphite or triallyl cyanurate. The compositions may be cured at elevated temperature. Specified polymers are polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride. Plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate octyl diphenyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, dioctyl adipate, dioctyl azelate and dioctyl sebacate; stabilizers, e.g. lead, cadmium, baruim and calcium soaps, dibutyl tin oxide, tin dilaurate, tin maleate, tin mercaptide and tin mercaptoacetate; ultraviolet light absorbers; dyes and pigments may also be present. In examples solutions of tris-1-aziridinyl phosphine oxide in dimethylformamide and in methanol are mixed with (1) solutions of polyvinyl chloride in a mixture of trichlorethylene and methyl ethyl ketone; (3a) a solution of polyvinyl chloride in dimethylformamide; (3b) a solution of a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer; and (3c) a plastisol comprising polyvinyl chloride, dioctyl phthalate and dibasic lead phosphite; (2) solutions of tris-1-(2-methyl) aziridinyl phosphine oxide in dimethyl formamide and in methanol are added to solutions of polyvinyl chloride in a mixture of trichlorethylene and methyl ethyl ketone; (4) a solution of tris-1-aziridinyl phosphine oxide is milled with polyvinyl chloride; and solutions of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers in mixtures of tetrahydrofuran and methyl ethyl ketone are mixed with (5) triallyl phosphite and tris-1-aziridinyl phosphine oxide; (6) triallyl phosphite and tris-1-(2-methyl)aziridinyl phosphine oxide; and (7) triallyl cyanurate and tris-1-aziridinyl phosphine oxide or tris-1-(2-methyl) aziridinyl phosphine oxide. The compositions may be used for coating pipelines, tanks and containers.
