Abstract
Plasticised polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride are coloured by incorporation of a dye or pigment concentrate which is a mixture of dye or pigment with a plasticised polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride having a lower working temperature, i.e. the plasticised mass may be rolled or extruded at a lower temperature. The concentrate is preferably in the form of a powder of particle size less than 1/10 mm., obtained, for instance, by the use of a high concentration of dye or pigment or by the addition of an inert additive such as talc. For the colouration of polyvinyl chloride the concentrate may be derived from polyvinyl chloride of a lower degree of polymerization, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidine chloride, or methyl or ethyl maleate or fumarate. In examples, the plasticisers used are dibutyl and dioctyl phthalates, the colouring materials used are diazotized Tobias acid (Vulofix Red), ultramarine blue and chrome yellow, and various working temperatures are specified. Tubes and profiled elements may be obtained.
