Abstract

1,056,499. Cylinders; valves; cooling. C.W. FU. Nov.4, 1963 [Dec.3, 1962; April 6, 1963], No. 43491/63. Heading F1B. In an I.C. engine having its cylinder head 2, upper wall 4 and exhaust valve 19 coated with a heat resistant, heat insulating material, the piston crown 7 is of similar material and has a clearance 5 whilst the lower part of the piston 8 slides in an unlined portion of the cylinder. The valve 19 is liquid cooled by a pumping system 20 operated by valve movement. The heat resistant material may be a quartz glass layer backed by a reflecting layer either on the outside of the layer 4 itself or the inner wall of the outer shell. Cooling may be by fins 14 or cooling liquid jackets 16, 24. The exhaust passage 24 may be lined with the heat resistant material.
