Abstract

A process for the mass coloration of a synthetic linear polyamide comprises using as colouring matter a chromium complex of a monoazo dyestuff of the formula A-N=N-E where A is a mono- or bi-cyclic aryl radical having a hydroxy group in the position orthoto the azo linkage and E is the residue of a coupling component which couples in a position adjacent to a hydroxy, amino or enolizable keto group, both A and E optionally having other substituents in addition to those in ortho-position to the azo linkage, provided that the molecule is devoid of sulphonic acid, carboxylic acid or sulphonamide groups. The colouring matter may be incorporated during or after polymerization. Many suitable dyestuffs are specified.
