Abstract

1,054,162. Continuous casting. RIO ALGOM MINES Ltd. July 9, 1964 [Aug. 21, 1964], No. 47796/64. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A method for purifying metal or extracting it from a halide thereof comprises feeding the impure metal or halide with a reducing agent if necessary on to the surface of an ingot of the metal maintained at an elevated temperature by means of a plasma jet torch, the unwanted products of the reaction being removed arid the metal formed being continuously removed by withdrawing and cooling the ingot. The apparatus used comprises a plasma torch 20, an ingot 23, reactant feeding means 36 and 37, a cooling jacket 24 and rolls 27 for removing the ingot. The reducing agent for the halide may be Na, K, Mg or H 2 and the metal produced or refined may be Ti, Zr, W, Ta, Hf, Nb or Mo. For making alloys some of the components of the alloy may be fed into the plasma jet arc in the metallic state together with the halides of other components. The arc support gas may be argon, helium or mixtures thereof.
